Contemporary half brown calf over marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Binding worn and chipped, text toned with several creased tears and chips along edges (mainly to fore-edge) with some minor loss, worm damage from page 217 until the end with loss. Contemporary ownership signature ("Jno. W. Elliott his Navigator Bought in Shipping port price $1.37 ½ July the 2nd 1817"), as well as the signatures of subsequent owners on both free endpapers. Overall, a fair copy of this important practical navigation book. The account of Lewis and Clark's expedition appears on pages 293-298 (the sixth edition of The Navigator, published in 1808, was the first published account of Lewis and Clark). Howes C855.
