[William Shakespeare]. The Tragedie of Julius Caesar [Extracted from the First Folio]. [London: Isaac Jaggard and Edward Blount, 1623]. First appearance of Julius Caesar in print. Folio in sixes (12.125 x 8 inches; 308 x 201 mm). Comprising 22 pages (pp. 109-130) on 11 leaves (kk-ll5v), leaf ll (pages 121/122) supplied from the second folio (1632). Head- and tail-pieces, no large ornamental capital (Hinman noting that Julius Caesar is the only play in the first folio without a large ornamental capital after the initial entry direction). Modern quarter brown calf over marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, boards ruled in gilt. Cream-colored endpapers, all edges trimmed. Professional restorations to each leaf, primarily confined to the margins and not affecting text, save for the catchword on kk3r (two letters affected), and touching some borders. Wormhole to [ll5] affecting one letter on line 17 verso only, three smaller wormholes to each leaf, just touching a few letters (obscuring the first letter on [kk4], line 5 recto). Some creasing, foxing, and other scattered staining. Still a very good copy of the first printing of this tragedy, "the best-printed play in the collection" (Greg, Shakespeare First Folio).

Greg III, pages 1109-1113; Greg, Shakespeare First Folio, pages 289-292; Hinman I, pages 35-37; Pforzheimer 905 (for First Folio); STC 22273.
