    More Information:

[Gordon W. Lillie ("Pawnee Bill"), William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody, subjects]. Frank C. Cooper. Stirring Lives of Buffalo Bill and Pawnee Bill. [New York: Parsons, 1912]. Second edition. Association copy, inscribed by Major Gordon W. Lillie ("Pawnee Bill") on the front free endpaper: "With Christmas / greetings / To Fred Sutton / from / G. W. Lillie / "Pawnee Bill" / Dec 25 - 1925;" additionally inscribed by pioneer and author Fred E. Sutton on the recto of the first frontispiece portrait: "To my good friend / G. S. Lowell. A little / memento of the / old west which is / a short history of two / of my old friends. / with wishes for a / Merry Christmas from / Fred E. Sutton / 12/25/32." Octavo. [224] pages; two frontispieces and numerous illustrations inserted throughout. Publisher's red cloth, front board and spine stamped in black, pictorial paper label on front board. Cloth spine a bit sunned; some edgewear to spine and corners; pictorial paper label soiled with marginal chipping; minor soiling to rear board; a few gutters overopened or cracked; text a bit toned; text with occasional thumbsoiling; front free endpaper has a short tear near the bottom inner margin. Overall, a very good copy with an excellent association. Gordon W. Lillie, "Pawnee Bill," spent his early years as an agent of the Pawnee Indian Agency in Pawnee territory, and later he joined "Buffalo Bill" Cody's Wild West show as a Pawnee interpreter - this earned him the moniker, "Pawnee Bill." He eventually left to begin his own wildly successful Wild West show. Fred E. Sutton was a pioneer, and one of the early settlers when the Oklahoma Territory opened in 1889. He was the co-author of Hands Up! (1927), and account of the outlaws of the west (although some of his claims have fallen into disrepute). From the James C. Seacrest Collection.
