Groucho Marx's Copy, Inscribed to Him from the Walt Disney Studios, with an Original Drawing of Mickey Mouse as Groucho

[Walt Disney]. [Groucho Marx, association]. Christopher Finch. The Art of Walt Disney. From Mickey to the Magic Kingdoms. New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., [1973]. First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by an artist at the Walt Disney Studios (Lee Reed [?]) to Groucho Marx, for his eighty-fifth birthday: "Happy Birthday/Groucho/Love,/Mickey"; beneath this is a black ink drawing of Mickey Mouse as Groucho Marx (as Marx appeared at the height of his film career, with big moustache, glasses, and cigar, walking bent at the waist) colored in with gray pencil; under this drawing is the following inscription: "1975 [circled]/Thanks From all of us/at Disney!/Lee Reed [?]". Large quarto. 458 pages. Profusely illustrated in color and black and white, with several fold-out illustrations. Publisher's full white buckram, Mickey Mouse and paintcan on board affixed to front board, spine lettered in gilt, printed mylar dust jacket. Jacket quite chipped, torn and soiled, with several tape repairs, cloth spine slightly rubbed and with minor thumbsoil. A good copy with wonderful association and original drawing.

    More Information:

Although Groucho Marx never worked with Disney per se, the Marx Brothers were caricatured in one of their early short cartoons (Harpo appeared by himself in a few early Disney cartoons). Perhaps Groucho developed a relationship with the Disney Studios when Ward Kimball (1914-2002, one of the famed Disney "Nine Old Men") appeared on a 1954 episode of Groucho's popular game show, You Bet Your Life.
