    [Valentine Hugo]. Roger de la Fresnaye. Archive of Correspondence with Valentine Hugo.
    This extensive collection consists of 125 ALS in French and four military songs, various sizes, various places [mainly Paris], various dates/years. Many letters with original mailing envelopes. This correspondence offers insight into life for a soldier during WWI, and Fresnaye writes often to Valentine Hugo about his experiences, his perceptions, and his thoughts on both his individual experience and the war in general. Fresnaye and Hugo apparently had a close friendship and corresponded for years about a variety of topics, including Fresnaye's declining health due to bronchitis, the death of their friend, the French novelist and poet Raymond Radiguet (1903-1923), the death of his mother, his relationship with the French poet, novelist, playwright, and filmmaker, Jean Cocteau (1889-1963), his military service, and his general alienation. Some of these letters strongly imply that Fresnaye and Hugo were occasional lovers.
    De La Fresnaye has become increasingly popular among collectors of Cubism; in 2017, one of his paintings (La conquête de l'air avec deux personnages, 1912-1913) brought over two million Euros at auction.
    Roger de La Fresnaye (1885-1925) was a French Cubist painter.
    Valentine Hugo (1887-1968), born Valentine Marie Augustine Gross, was a French artist and writer. She is best known for her work with the Russian ballet and with the French Surrealists. Hugo hosted salons with many artists, writers, and musicians in Paris, including avant-garde leaders such as Pablo Picasso. She would often sketch her visitors, foreshadowing her portraiture work of the Surrealist leaders later on.
    Condition: Some wear, thumb soiling, creasing; generally good to very good.
