Description[Fore-Edge Painting]. The Dramatic Works of William Shakspeare [sic]. With a glossary. Chiswick: Printed by C. Whittingham for Thomas Tegg; R. Jennings; et al., 1823. Early fore-edge painting depicting an English riverfront scene with a cathedral in the background, artist unknown, pre-1839. 12mo in sixes. 666 pages. Illustrated with engraved title page and title page vignette. Contemporary full dark red straight grain morocco decorated in gilt, spine decorated in gilt with four double raised bands, decorative gilt roll to edges. Minor edgewear, spine darkened and worn, joints starting, somewhat rubbed. Inner dentelles gilt, brown endpapers; ink notation to front free endpaper verso, bookplate of Réné-Charles Guilbert de Pixerécourt (noted French playwright and director) and modern pencil notations to front blank recto, endpapers somewhat worn, front hinge starting. Internally generally clean, all edges gilt; gutter overextended at pages 2-3, minor intermittent thumbsoiling. Very good with bright and finely detailed, though lightly worn, fore-edge painting.
