[Tom Horn]. Life of Tom Horn Government Scout and Interpreter Written by Himself Together with His Letters and Statements by His Friends. A Vindication. Denver: Published (for John C. Coble) by The Louthan Book Company, [1904]. First edition. Octavo. [3]-317 pages. Thirteen photographic portraits (including frontispiece portrait of Tom Horn). Publisher's original pictorial boards printed in orange and green on brown cloth. Titles stamped in orange on the spine. Light shelf wear to boards, contents toned, as usual, otherwise a superb copy in near fine condition. A rare hardbound edition, one of perhaps 120 so bound. Typically the more common edition in printed wrappers is encountered. Adams, Guns 1033: "Scarce.... The authorship of this book is variously attributed to Horn himself, his friend and employer, rancher John C. Coble, and Hattie Louthan, of the family which owned the Louthan Book Company, publisher of the book. It is an attempt to vindicate the crimes of Horn, and much of it is about his scouting days in Arizona." Adams, Herd 1066: "Also published in cloth, but the cloth-bound edition is much rarer than the wrapper-bound copies." Adams, One-Fifty 72. Dobie, pp. 106-107. Braislin 971 (cloth) & 970 (wraps). Graff 1957. Jones 1696. Norris 1670. Rader 1931.
