[Texas C.S.A] A Declaration of the Causes which impel the State of Texas to Secede from the Federal Union: Adopted by the Delegates of the people of Texas, in Convention assembled, on the 2nd day of February, A.D., 1861; AND Ratified by the people by a vote of 46,000 to 13,000 on the 23rd day of February, A.D., 1861. Dallas: Basye Bros., Printers. 8vo. 8 pp. Disbound and stitched. Moderately age toned; generally fine.

When South Carolina seceded in December 1860, Texans began calling for secession as well. A Constitutional Convention was organized and on Feb. 1, 1861, which voted overwhelmingly in favor of a formal ordinance of secession. Shortly thereafter, a Committee of Public Safety ordered the forced removal of 2,800 federal troops in Texas and the seizure of all Federal property. On Feb. 23, 1861, Texas citizens voted 75% in favor of a public referendum to ratify secession. Approximately 14,000 copies of the declaration were printed in Austin, including 2000 in German and 2000 in Spanish. This is a later printing made in Dallas.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
