First edition, first printing, with initial letters on title on title-page are larger than the other letters. Large octavo. viii, 844, [4, blank] pages. Twelve illustrated plates inserted throughout with full-page and in-text illustrations.. Contemporary dark gray buckram, brown gilt morocco lettering label on spine, plain gray endleaves (possible publisher's pre-fire original binding). Spine a bit sunned, some marginal chipping to label; some edgewear to binding; bookseller's ticket on front pastedown; some light offsetting to front endleaves, first few and last few leaves toned, with some occasional wear and soiling. Overall, a very good copy. Many copies of this book were destroyed in a fire a few years after publication, uncommon thus. Basic Texas Books 193. Howes S797.
