[Taylor and Hessey, binder]. Mrs. Henry [Mary] Tighe. Psyche. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, & Brown, 1811. Third edition. Fore-edge painting depicting "The Marlborough Gem," after Josiah Wedgewood, fore-edge artist unknown, circa 19th century. Octavo. 314, [2] pages. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece portrait. Contemporary diced Russian calf decorated in gilt, spine decorated in gilt with three double raised bands, partial decorative gilt roll to edges with binder's stamp in gilt to fore-edge. Corners just bumped, moderate edgewear, joints starting, signs of earlier restorations to spine, somewhat rubbed and soiled, staining to lower board. Inner dentelles gilt, brown endpapers, armorial bookplate of The Earl of Ilchester to front pastedown, minor soiling, pencil notations to endpapers. All edges gilt; somewhat foxed, primarily to front of text block, moderate wear to gilt on edges. Very good with bright, well-preserved fore-edge painting.

"While many of the Pysche volumes are bound by Taylor & Hessey, one should keep an open mind that likely the binder is not responsible for these fore-edge paintings. They do date to the nineteenth century and the actual artist's name is unknown." Weber, AD, page 261.
