[Francis Scott Key]. The Defence of Fort M'Henry. ("The Star-Spangled Banner"). Philadelphia: Moses Thomas, 1814. In volume IV of The Analectic Magazine. First book appearance of the American national anthem, one of the earliest printed appearances overall. Octavo. 524 pages. With engraved title-page, printed title-page and several portraits (including one of Zebulon Pike) inserted throughout. This volume collects the July through December, 1814 issues, bound here in book form. Key's poem, The Defence of Fort M'Henry ("Tune - Anacreon in Heaven") appears on page 433-434 of the November section. Contemporary half brown sheep over marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, burgundy gilt morocco lettering label. Spine toned, worn and chipped, joints cracking, some wear and soiling to boards, hinges cracking, text and plates toned with some foxing. Near contemporary ownership signature on front free endpaper. Some toning and offsetting to the leaf where The Defence of Fort M'Henry appears. Still, a very good copy, and one of the earliest printed appearances of The Star Spangled Banner.
