A Satirical Look at Rude People with Walking Sticks and Umbrellas

[Solomon Upright, pseudonym of John Shute Duncan]. Hints to the Bearers of Walking-Sticks and Umbrellas. London: Printed by C. Squire, for J. Murray, 1809. Third edition (only the second is earlier, as the first doesn't appear to be extant). Approximately 8.25 x 5.25 inches. Octavo. 32 pages, 8 (publisher's catalogue). With eight hand-colored engravings inserted throughout, as well as additional woodcuts in the text. Original printed wrappers. Some wear and chipping to spine. A fine copy of this extremely rare and fragile item.

John Shute Duncan (1769-1844) was the keeper of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. He wrote serious scholarly works on natural history, theology, and sociology; but this strange little book is his only foray into satire, as he skewers rude people who fail to use their walking sticks or umbrellas with care. Rare.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
