First Edition of Clarkson's Abolitionist Book on the Slave Trade, with the Famous "Slave Ship" Plate

[Slavery]. Thomas Clarkson. The History of the Rise, Progress and Accomplishment of the Abolition of the African Slave Trade by the British Parliament. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme, 1808. First edition. Two octavo volumes bound into one. [iv], 572, [ii], 592 pages. With folding engraved map, folding engraved plan of a slave ship and one engraved plate inserted throughout. With a clipped signature of Clarkson affixed to the verso of the first blank, opposite the first title page. Contemporary half tan calf over marbled boards, spine ruled in blind, green and brown gilt morocco lettering labels. Binding somewhat worn, text toned and foxed, fold-out map foxed with several tears (mainly to folds), slave ship plate has one small tape repair at verso and light foxing. Signature of Robert Young on title-page, with the bookplate of Hugh W. Young of Burghead on front pastedown. Overall, a very good copy. This book was the first important book dedicated the abolition of the slave trade in England. Clarkson worked tirelessly to see to it that owning slaves became a crime. Blockson 101, 17. Dumond p. 40.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
