A Handsomely Bound First Edition Set
    of Churchill's
    History of the
    English-Speaking Peoples

[Sir] Winston S. Churchill. A History of the English-Speaking Peoples. London: Cassell and Company, [1956-1958]. First edition, first impressions. Four octavo volumes (9.25 x 6.0625 inches; 234 x 154 mm.). Comprising, Volume I: The Birth of Britain; Volume II: The New World; Volume III: The Age of Revolution; and Volume IV: The Great Democracies. xxi, 416; xi, 344; xi, 332; xi, 322 pages. Maps and genealogical tables in the text. Handsomely bound in later twentieth-century three-quarter navy blue crushed levant morocco, ruled in gilt, over blue cloth boards. Spines panelled and lettered in gilt in compartments with five gilt-dotted raised bands, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. A few corners very light rubbed; Volume I with small a brown spot in the upper blank corner (paper flaw?) of pages 399/400; Volume II with very faint ink spray on page 196. Otherwise a very fine set.
"If a potential buyer of these volumes were to ask one question: Why must they beyond any doubt find a place on my shelves?-it can be answered shortly. There has never been a history like this written by a man who has himself made history; never have the political and diplomatic decisions of the past been considered by a writer who, all his life, has had to make decisions of the same character and of the same magnitude. That alone must make this history unique" (rear flap of dust jacket for Volume I in the original publisher's red buckram binding). Woods A138(a). From the library of John Carroll Collins.
