One of the Finest Sets of Shakespeare
    Produced in the Eighteenth Century

[Sir Thomas Hanmer, editor]. William Shakespeare. The Works of Shakespear. Oxford: Printed at the Clarendon Press, 1770-1771. The famous second edition of Hanmer's illustrated Works of Shakespear, expanded from the first. Six large quarto volumes. Illustrated with thirty six full-page copperplate engravings by Hubert Gravelot after Francis Hayman. Also with the frontispiece portrait of Shakespeare after Chandos, and two other plates of the Westminster and Stratford monuments to Shakespeare. Bound to style in modern half brown calf over marbled boards, spines elaborately tooled in gilt in compartments, red and green gilt morocco lettering and numbering labels, all edges marbled. Minor rubbing to bindings, professional tape repairs to the rear of the frontispiece in volume I and the recto of the title-page of volume IV. Small portion of upper corner of page 121/122 in volume V torn away with no loss. A bright, nearly fine example of this wonderful set.

Thomas Dibdin stated that Hanmer's edition was the first Shakespeare set "which appeared in any splendid typographical form." The first edition was published in 1743-1744. This splendid second edition contains Pope's original Preface, the first appearance of Rowe's important biography of Shakespeare, and additional notes by Percy, Warton and Hawkins, as well as a larger glossary and a poem by Ben Jonson. "This reprint of Hanmer on excellent paper, perhaps the best-produced Shakespeare edition of the 18th century, deserves more recognition than it has received... artistically the most delightful edition of Shakespeare." (Franklin, Shakespeare Domesticated p 31). Jaggard 503. Folger II, 53.
