    An Important Shakespearean Source Book

[Shakespeare Source Book]. [Raphael Holinshed, William Harrison]. The First and second volumes of Chronicles, comprising 1 The description and historie of England, 2 The description and historie of Ireland, 3 The description and historie of Scotland. Now newlie augmented and continued (with manifold matters of singular note and worthie memorie. [London: Henry Denham, 1587].

Second edition of this important work. Volume I only. Folio (approximately 14.75 x 9.25 inches). [viii], 250, [12, The first table alphabeticall] pages. Lacking first and last blanks.

Bound to style in modern full brown morocco, covers paneled in black, spine ruled and stamped in black and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands. Title page with dampstain, some soiling to endpapers. Very good.

This is the edition that is commonly known as "Shakespeare's Holinshed," because Shakespeare drew from it so heavily for his plays. Although this edition is not illustrated as the first edition was, it has lovely and decorative woodcut initials and motifs throughout.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
