[Samuel Mearne, presumed]. The Book of Common Prayer, and Administration of the Sacraments, and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church. According to the use of the Church of England... London: Printed by His Ma[jes]ties Printers, 1669. 17th century fore-edge painting presumably by Samuel Mearne, depicting the Royal Arms, supporters, and motto, surrounded by flowers. Small folio. 298 leaves; one column, black letter, ruled in red. Illustrated with engraved title page and woodcut head pieces, tailpieces, and initials. Contemporary full black crushed morocco finely and elaborately decorated in gilt, spine decorated similarly with natural morocco spine label lettered in gilt and six raised bands. Corners bumped and rubbed, moderate edgewear, some restorations to joints, edges, and corners, spine somewhat worn with losses, two holes each to upper and lower board, presumably from ties, partially filled in. Inner dentelles gilt, later marbled endpapers; hinges starting, endpapers somewhat worn with some repairs. Internally generally clean and tight, all edges gilt; pencil notations, ink ownership of John Fuller Russell, B. C. L. and dated 1841 to second front blank, soiling, minor foxing, moderate wear and soiling to edges, some gutters overextended, 0.25 x 0.5-inch open tear to [B4], some ink notations and pasted edits to text and margins. Very good or better with charming and still bright, though worn, fore-edge painting.

This binding and fore-edge painting is extremely similar to another Samuel Mearne binding held in the Wormsley Library (Book of Common Prayer, London: 1699), but without the crowned cypher of Charles II present in the Wormsley copy (Weber, AD, page 205).
