[Samuel Johnson, translator; Jerónimo Lobo]. A Voyage to Abyssinia. By Father Jerome Lobo, a Portuguese Jesuit. London: Printed for A. Bettesworth, and C. Hitch, 1735. First edition in English. Octavo. xii, 396, [8, contents] pages. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces, decorative initials. Title-page printed in red and black. Recent full grayish-brown leather (sheep?); spine stamped in gilt and blind with five raised bands making six compartments; green leather spine label. All edges trimmed. Original flyleaves. Minor shelf wear, surface scratches to binding. Edges of text block toned and somewhat soiled, particularly at top. Regular toning to interior iwth occasional scatted spot-soiling and small damp stains; short tear, approximately .5", from bottom edge of title-page, not affecting text; evidence of dog-earing, other page folding. Very good.

Originally composed in Portuguese by Jesuit missionary Jerónimo Lobo, detailing his passage form Goa to Abyssinia and his efforts there to convert the native population to Catholicism until the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1634. The text was then translated into French by Abbé Joachim Le Grand. It was in this form that a young Samuel Johnson read the text and set about undertaking a translation of the French text into English. This was "his first sustained literary work.... A Voyage to Abyssinia, which runs to 400 pages, earned Johnson 5 guineas from Thomas Warren, a Birmingham bookseller"--DNB. ESTC T88596.
