    More Information:

[Rutherford B. Hayes, contributor]. In Memoriam. James M. Comly. [N.p., n.d., ca. 1887]. First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by Hayes on the first blank: "To Dr Saml A Green/With Compliments/Rutherford B. Hayes/Spiegel Grove/26 Nov. 89". Large octavo. 81, [5, blank] pages. With portrait frontispiece of Comly inserted at front. Publisher's full black morocco, boards triple-ruled in blind, front board lettered in gilt. Front joint cracked; spine torn near headcap; spine a bit loose; spine chipped at edges; rear joint just starting; some edgewear to boards; light soiling to boards; front hinge starting; boards very slightly bowed outward; evidence of bookplate removal on front pastedown, and some related offsetting on front free endpaper; text a bit toned; some thumbsoiling to endleaves. A fair copy. The recipient, Dr. Samuel Abbott Green, was a medical officer in the Civil War. He left the practice of medicine to become a politician (he became mayor of Boston in 1882). The subject of this tribute book, General James M. Comly, was a journalist, author, and newspaper owner. He was a good friend of Rutherford B. Hayes, and used his newspaper to help Hayes get elected governor of Ohio, and continued to help Hayes' career. During the Civil War, Comly was a colonel, and later promoted to general. From the James C. Seacrest Collection.
