[Roger Bartlett, presumed]. Thomas Comber. A Companion to the Temple. Or, a help to devotion in the daily use of the common-prayer. London: Printed by Andrew Clark for Henry Brome, 1676. Part I, second edition; Part II, first edition. Contemporary fore-edge painting depicting flowers, birds, and butterflied with the initials "A. B." within a laurel wreath and initials "J. F." or "I. F." below, artist unknown. Ex-libris Estelle Doheny. Two volumes. Octavo. [40], 455, [9]; [8], 368, 365-516, [8] pages; text of Part II continuous despite pagination. Title pages in red and black; Part I with engraved frontispiece portrait of Charles II signed F. H. van Houe fec[it] and eight fold-out tables, Part II with engraved frontispiece depicting Joel 3:17 and four fold-out tables. Contemporary cottage-roof style turkey morocco elaborately decorated in fine gilt tooling and detailed in silver, spine elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt with four raised bands. Moderate edgewear, joints just starting, spine somewhat worn, signs of professional restoration and retooling to some corners and edges. Inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers; bookplate of William Howley, late Archbishop of Canterbury, to front pastedowns, booklabel of Estelle Doheny to front free endpapers recto, hinges reinforced, endpapers somewhat faded with a few instances of professional restorations. Internally generally clean and tight, all edges gilt, somewhat foxed chiefly to front and back of textblock, moderate wear to gilt on edges. Housed in brown levant morocco double pull-off case by Rivière & Son with their stamp in gilt, minor wear. Very good with rare and well-preserved contemporary fore-edge painting.

The pull-off case attributes this binding work to Samuel Mearne, as described in Carl Weber's, Fore-Edge Paintings (1966), but the more recent scholarship of Jeff Weber (Annotated Dictionary, 2010) identifies the work as that of Roger Bartlett. Bartlett and Mearne used similar tools in their work and are both considered strong candidates to be one of the Queen's Binders, identified as Queen's Binders A, B, or C.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
