First edition, limited to 1,000 copies, designed by Rockwell Kent and printed under the supervision of William A. Kittredge at R. R. Donnelley & Sons Company. Three quarto volumes. xxvii, [1], 279, [1, blank]; vi, [2], 284; vii, [1], 282, [6] pages. With 280 woodcut illustrations by Rockwell Kent. Original beveled black cloth stamped in silver on front cover and spine in a design by Kent. Top edges stained black. In the original acetate dust jackets and aluminum slipcase. Light wear to extremities of acetate jackets (including a few short tears), and a tape repair to the rear flap of volume II, some faint offsetting from illustrations. Still, a fine copy of one of the most famous American illustrated books of the twentieth century ("... heralded by various critics as the greatest book arts work ever produced in the United States." - Stanley).
