    Description

    With Forty-Eight Copper-Engraved Maps

[Robert Wilkinson, publisher]. A General Atlas, being a Collection of Maps of the World and Quarters, the Principal Empires, Kingdoms &c. With their several Provinces & other Subdivisions, Correctly Delineated. London: Robert Wilkinson, 1800-[1801, dated as such at the bottom of the Contents leaf].

Quarto. With forty-eight copper-engraved maps with original outline color and partial shading (the first two maps of the World and "Mercator's Chart of Ditto" are double-page). Many of the maps published in 1794. Plates measuring 13 x 10.5 inches.

Contemporary brown three-quarter cloth over marbled boards. Binding heavily worn, with both boards partially spilt along the joints. Scattered remnants of a glazed material (or possible leather remnants that once covered the cloth) on the spine and corners. Minor foxing throughout, mostly to the margins of the maps. Engraved title toned and stained. Each map numbered in light pencil at the upper right corner. A very good copy of a scarce collection of maps.

Wilkinson's General Atlas was first published in London in 1794. This edition is dated 1800 on the engraved title and 1801 on the contents leaf, with the maps dated between 1793 and 1800. Five maps are of American interest (World, United States, North America, West Indies, and South America).

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
