Description

Rare and Quintessential Staple of American Photography, Signed by Robert Frank

[Robert Frank, photographer]. The Americans. Introduction by Jack Kerouac. New York: Grove Press, Inc., [1959]. First American edition, hardcover issue. Signed by Frank on the title page. Oblong quarto. Unpaginated. Publisher's full black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, dust jacket. Mild discoloration to spine ends. Small open tears to jacket edges, restored on verso. Mildly rubbed and soiled. FFEP separating at hinge. Very good.

From the introduction: "That crazy feeling in America when the sun is hot on the streets and music comes out of the jukebox or from a nearby funeral, that's what Robert Frank has captured in these tremendous photographs taken as he traveled on the road around practically forty-eight states in an old used car (on Guggenheim Fellowship) and with the agility, mystery, genius, sadness and strange secrecy of a shadow photographed scenes that have never been seen before on film."

The Americans "changed the nature of photography, what it could say and how it could say it. [ . . . ] it remains perhaps the most influential photography book of the 20th century" [O'Hagan].

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
