    [Robert Beverley]. The History of the Present State of Virginia, In Four Parts. London: Printed for R. Parker, 1705. First edition. Octavo. [12], 104, 40, 64, 83, 20 contents, errata pages. Engraved frontispiece and 14 copperplates engraved by Simon Gribelin (1661-1733), folding table. Contemporary brown calf naively blind stamped with simple floral decoration. Title stamped on a morocco label; spine with five raised bands. Edges speckled red. Housed in a recent red morocco slipcase. Boards worn at the edges; joints starting; hinges cracked but holding; top corner of front free endpaper lacking; Internally bright, the illustrations particularly fine impressions. Very good. This important work is divided into four parts as follows: I. The History of the First Settlement of Virginia, and the Government thereof, to the present time. II. The Natural Productions and Conveniences of the Country, suited to Trade and improvement. III. The Native Indians, their Religion, Laws, and Customs, in War and Peace. IV. The present State of the Country, as to the Polity of the Government, and the Improvement of the Land. "After John Smith, the first account of this colony, the first one penned by a native and the best contemporary record of its aboriginal tribes and the life of its early settlers." (Howes).
