Description

[Rev. A. B. Lawrence]. A History of Texas, or the Emigrant's Guide to the New Republic by a Resident Emigrant, Late From the United States...With a Brief Introduction by the Rev. A. B. Lawrence of New Orleans. New York: Nafis & Cornish, 1844. Third issue of the 1840 first edition, without the dedication leaf to Texas Vice President David Burnet but with a facsimile of the dedication page laid in. 12mo. xxii; [23]-275pp. Frontispiece showing "City of Austin the new capitol of Texas 1844." Rebound in blue cloth with titles stamped in gilt on the spine. Marbled fore-edges. Occasional light-to-moderate foxing scattered internally, with a few occurrences of light pencil underlined passages. Map reinforced with tape at the gutter. Former owner's bookplate on the front pastedown. Otherwise a sound copy in very good condition. Offered in a modern faux-moiré silk-covered slipcase.

First published in 1840, the work provides a fascinating look at the early Republic, with descriptions of geography, local customs, Indians, religion, agriculture, and one of the earliest and most extensive descriptions of the "city" of Austin.
