[Raymond de Beccarie de Pavie, Baron de Fourquevaux]. Instructions for the Warres. Translated by Paul Ive. London: Thomas Man and Tobie Cooke, 1589; Paul Ive. The Practice of Fortification. London: Thomas Man and Toby Cooke, 1589. First editions in English. Quarto (7.5 x 5.5 inches; 191 x 140 mm). [20], 312 (pages 41 misnumbered 14; pages 86-87 misnumbered 70-71; pages 90-91 misnumbered 74-75; page 149 misnumbered 199), [2], 40 pages (page 39 misnumbered 93). Two folding plates and a number of woodcuts. Lacking engraved frontispieces. Two bookplates, one of Boies Penrose II (front endpaper) and one of Boies Penrose (on back endpaper). Bound in full vellum, that is slightly worn and cockled; missing ties. Internally sound, with slight dampstaining on the top edges of a few pages, slight toning overall. Front and back endpages are from another book in Latin. In custom made cloth box. Overall good to very good. ESTC S109957.A scarce first English edition of two rare works on warfare and fortification published during the late 16th century. The translator, Paul Ive, was an English military engineer who traveled widely as a consultant on design and construction of fortifications. The bookplate on the front endpaper is that of Boies Penrose II (1902-1976), the son of the Pennsylvania politician and political boss Boies Penrose (1860-1921), whose bookplate is on the back endpaper.
A nice copy of this rare 16th century work.
