    Description

[Raoul Whitfield]. Joseph Shaw and Prudence Whitfield. Four Letters, Signed, and a Typescript, with Cover Letter. New York: unpublished correspondence, October 1945-December 1947. Group of four letters on Sydney A. Sanders literary agency letterhead, three typed and signed and one manuscript, from Joseph Shaw to Prudence Whitfield, discussing the publication and reprinting of Raoul Whitfield's stories and novels, as well as advances and rights. Typescript, presumably by Mr. Whitfield, of the story "Sherry Sets a Trap," accompanied by typed letter from Shaw to Prudence Whitfield. Six stationery leaves (9.5 x 7.25 inches; 240 x 183 mm.) with text on rectos only, loose sheets; fourteen letter-sized leaves (11 x 8.5 inches; 280 x 215 mm.) with text on rectos only, 1-13 numbered, loose sheets. Letters with minor wear and soft creasing from handling and two pronounced horizontal creases from folding to place in envelope; a few instances of pencil or ink annotation; one letter with black smudge at bottom margin and a scattering of small marginal holes from what appear to be tacks. Typescript lightly toned with a bit of edge wear, some slight chipping and soft creasing to first and final leaf; loss to top corner of first leaf and lower corner of final leaf; double creases from placement in envelope. Near fine overall. Shaw was the editor of Black Mask magazine, to which Whitfield was a regular contributor. Prudence was Whitfield's first wife, surviving Raoul and his second wife, Emily O'Neill Vanderbilt Thayer, by a number of decades. All correspondence takes place following Raoul's death in January 1945. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
