[Pocket Map]. Columbus Drew. Map of the State of Florida, Showing the Progress of the Surveys from the Annual Report of the Surveyor General for 1856. Jacksonville, Florida: Columbus Drew, 1856. First edition. Folding lithographic pocket map, unfolds to 26 x 24.25 inches (660 x 616 mm), folds into 12mo. Original brown cloth, covers decoratively stamped in blind, front cover lettered in gilt; hinge split with some loss to paper, not affecting map. Delicately hand-colored with green, pink, blue, yellow, and orange. Minor offsetting, creases along old folds, a few short tears to folds, two short horizontal tears (measuring approximately 1.75 inches, 44 mm) to right margin along the second and third folds into the plate but not affecting the image, two short tears to left margin, just touching the border. Very minor spotting, primarily confined to margins and not affecting image. A remarkable copy of a true Americana rarity, near fine.

RBH records only one instance of this first edition appearing at auction, over 100 years ago, by Henkels in 1913. RBH records only one copy of the first edition in a dealer catalogue, Rosenbach, in 1938. We have found only one other listing in a dealer catalogue, Eberstadt in 1950.

Eberstadt 126:181. From the A.D. Andrews Collection of Southern and Natural History
