    Description

[Pliny the Elder]. Caius Plinius Secundus. The Historie of the World. Commonly Called, the Naturall Historie of C. Plinius Secundus. Translated into English by Philemon Holland. London: Adam Islip, 1601. First edition in English. Two folio volumes in one (approximately 11.75 x 7.5 inches). [58], 614, [42]; [12], 632, [86] pages. Woodcut device on titles, woodcut initials. Errata leaf at the end of volume two. Near contemporary half brown calf over marbled boards. Black gilt morocco lettering labels, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, six raised bands, later endleaves. Hinges repaired, some wear to binding, joints worn (front joint starting hear headcap), some ink notations throughout, especially to front blank and title-page, ownership signatures on title-page and page [9] of volume I and page [4] of volume II, as well as some ink markings on woodcut devices on first few leaves of volume I and the final leaf in volume II. Two leaves in volume II (pages 5-8) are heavily chipped at margins and creased (these leaves may be supplied from another copy). Some creasing to first few and last few leaves. Some minor worm damage near the end of volume II. Upper margins of the first several pages of volume I trimmed a bit close. Some occasional soiling in text. Still, a good copy.

More Information: First translation into English of Pliny's important encyclopedic work, which was, for centuries, considered the highest authority on subjects relating to the natural and physical world, including botany, zoology, geography, pharmacology, and more. Lowndes referred to this translation as a "work of immense labour, and what few men of his time could have executed in a superior manner to Dr. Holland." Lowndes p. 1885.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
