[Pillone Library, Cesare Vecellio]. Annales Sive Historiae Rerum Belgicarum. Francoforti ad Moenum [Frankfurt]: [Georgium Corvinum] impensis Sigismund Feyerabend, 1580. Fore-edge painting by Cesare Vecellio, depicting a scholar seated at a desk overlooking a landscape with the title "A N N A / L E S" below, top and tail edges decorated with abstract line designs. Two volumes in one. Folio. 427, [1, blank], [20, index and imprint]; 187, [1, blank] pages. Roman letter, Volume II with separate title page: Adriano Barlando, et al. Rerum Maxime memorabilium in Brabantia... [Frankfurt]: Sigimundi Feyrabendt, 1580]. Each title with a woodcut border, illustrated with woodcut headpieces, tailpieces, initials, and publisher's mark to last leaf of volume one. Contemporary full vellum, remnants of four alum-tawed leather ties, spine with four raised bands, headbands in grey, white, and yellow. Corners just bumped and rubbed, worming to edges and spine, chipping to head and of spine with some losses, boards slightly bowed, dampstaining and soiling, small remnants of original ties. Bookplates of Thomas Brooke F. S. A. (Armitage Bridge) and Pierre Berès (No. 133 of the Pillone Library) to front pastedown, worming to hinges and edges of endpapers, some dampstaining and uneven toning, minor soiling, 2 x 1-inch open tear and 3-inch closed tear to front free endpaper, 2.5-inch narrow open tear to rear free endpaper. Internally generally clean, all edges trimmed; somewhat foxed, some dampstaining chiefly to margins, minor soiling, minor text block edgewear. Housed in maroon cloth slipcase; joints starting, somewhat worn. Very good with still bright, though worn, fore-edge painting.

A rare item from the celebrated library of Dr. Odorico Pillone and his father. Late in the 16th century, Odorico invited Cesare Vecellio (first cousin once removed of the master painter Titian [Tiziano Vecellio], whom he trained under) to decorate a number of books in his library with fore-edge paintings, thereby establishing the earliest known private collection of fore-edge paintings. As was Vecellio's preferred style, the painting here is of a scholar, brightly dressed in red and a black hat, centered on the fore-edge and additionally visible on the closed edge.
