A Famous Travel Guide for Missionaries Going to China with Excellent Information About Armenia

[Philippe Avril]. Paris: Claude Barbin, Jean Boudot, George & Louis Josse, 1692. First edition. Quarto. Approximately 10 x 7 inches. [xx], 406, [22, Tables des Matieres and Privilege] pages. Complete with portrait of the dedicatee (Stanislaus Jablonowski) by Picart, three engraved plates by Vallet and a folding map of Siberia and Kitay. With six engraved intertextual vignettes throughout. Bound in later (nineteenth-century) quarter purple levant morocco over pebbled brown boards, spine ruled and lettered in compartments, five raised bands, marbled endleaves. Spine sunned, some rubbing to spine and moderate wear to boards, one tiny hole to spine, first text signature loose, front hinge just starting, evidence of plate removal on front free endpaper, previous owner's small inkstamp on title-page, some minor toning or soiling to text. Still, a very good copy. From the collection of a gentleman of New York.

    More Information:

"In 1685 Avril set out to find an overland route to China for Jesuit missionaries. He journeyed via Cyprus, Syria, eastern Asia Minor and Persia to Astrackhan in Tartary where he was turned back by the Russians who would not allow him to cross their Asian territories. Avril then returned to Constantinople and made his way to France via Moldavia" (Blackmer). Blackmer and Lust, p. 13 (discussing the 1693 English edition).

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
