A Matched Set of Two Special Patron Copies from an Edition of Only Fifty, Each Inscribed and Signed by Barry Moser

[Pennyroyal Press]. Lewis Carroll. The Two "Alice" Books, including: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. [and:] Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There. West Hatfield, Massachusetts: 1982.

Both from a limited edition of 350 copies signed and numbered by Moser, of which each is number 2 of 50 special patron's copies, each with an extra suite of signed illustrations and two original pencil drawings; with a "Dear Reader" letter laid into the extra suite of plates in the first volume signed by Moser, and with an original pencil sketch at the bottom of the colophon page of the second volume. Folio. 148; 174 pages. Both illustrated by Barry Moser, with a Preface and Notes by James R. Kincaid, text edited by Selwyn Goodacre, and printed by Harold McGrath. Seventy-five wood-engravings by Moser in the first volume, ninety-five in the second.

Both books in the stunning original full morocco bindings by Gray Parrot: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in gilt-stamped purple, Through the Looking-Glass in deep, dark pink. Text printed in red, blue and black, title calligraphy by G. G. Laurens. With the extra suite of plates in each volume laid into a cloth chemise. Each volume housed in original gilt-stamped quarter leather clamshell boxes. The "Dear Readers" letter laid into the first volume has a few stray red pencil marks in right margin. Both boxes have extensive notes in pencil to inside front cover; inside front cover of box of first volume has some offsetting and discoloration at edges along the glue line. Very minor fraying to clamshell boxes and some areas of discoloration, which may be a characteristic of the cloth itself. Both books are lovely examples of fine press editions, and both are in fine condition.

A wonderful example of the craftsmanship of the artisans affiliated with Pennyroyal Press, highlighted by the eloquence and skill of premier illustrator Barry Moser.

    Dwyer, Pennyroyal 26 and 27.
