First Appearance of Dorian Gray[Oscar Wilde]. First Appearance of The Picture of Dorian Gray in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine. Published simultaneously Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company and London: Ward, Lock & Company, July, 1890. First printing of the complete novel with the text printed in 13 chapters. This being the American issue with J. B. Lippincott imprint printed in larger type on the front wrapper. Octavo. Wilde's novel appears on pages 3-100. Publisher's original printed wrappers. Wrappers toned with some chipping along the edges; two small holes along the bound edge, else internally clean and in very good condition.
This constitutes the first appearance of this important novel which was revised and enlarged for final publication in book form. "The effect of Dorian Gray was prodigious. No novel had commanded so much attention for years, or awakened sentiments so contradictory in its readers." (Richard Ellmann, Oscar Wilde). Ward, Lock published the first English book edition later in 1891 with a text which Wilde substantially altered and expanded, adding six new chapters.
