[Orville Wright]. Fred C. Kelly. The Wright Brothers. New York: Harcourt, Brace, [1943]. First edition, association copy, inscribed by Orville Wright on the half-title: "To Dr. Joseph S. Ames, / with high esteem and / affectionate regards. / Orville Wright / May 4, 1943." Octavo. [xii], 340 pages; several illustrated plates inserted throughout. Publisher's blue cloth, spine lettered in white; in original dust jacket. Cloth spine a bit dull, some rubbing to spine and corners, upper front corner bumped; light rubbing to binding; light offsetting to endleaves; text lightly toned. Dust jacket spine a bit sunned; tape repairs to jacket verso at top; some wear, scuffing to jacket; some chipping, a few tears to jacket; some thumbsoiling to rear jacket panel and flaps; price-clipped. Overall, a very good copy, with an interesting association. Dr. Joseph Sweeman Ames was a professor of physics at Johns Hopkins University, and one of the founding Members of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA, the aeronautical organization that preceded NASA). This committee worked with Wright, as well as other aircraft manufacturers, to make sure that the United States government had enough aircraft for military and other purposes. The Ames Aeronautical Laboratory in California is named for him. From the James C. Seacrest Collection.
