Description

[Original Art]. Raymond Houlihan. SIGNED. Original Pen and Ink Drawing, 3rd Day at Gettysburg. This panorama style illustration was used in the December 1957 issue of American Heritage. Signed by the artist in the lower right corner. Measures 8 x 22.5 inches. The piece is adhered to backing, with production notes in the margins; however, age has significantly affected the adhesive and the art can be fairly easily removed and rematted or framed to hide the production notes. There is only mild smudging, and overall the drawing is clean, bright and in excellent condition.

    More Information:

Ray Houlihan is one of the more underrated and unknown magazine illustrators. He's better known for his work illustrating comic books in the 1940s. As such, this Civil War scene seems a stark departure from that world; however, a look at much of Houlihan's career during the 1950s will reveal magazine illustrations such as this one, that tackle an array of darker, more complex subjects.
From the American Heritage Publishing Archives.

Since 1949 American Heritage has been the leading magazine of American history and culture. As historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. wrote, "American Heritage is everything a magazine of popular history should be - elegant, lively, informative, entertaining, and intelligent."

Over the last half century, the staff of American Heritage Publishing accumulated one of the largest and most comprehensive archives relating to American history and culture, with thousands of photographs, illustrations, engravings, and maps.  The collections are especially deep in military and political history, but include materials in thousands of other subject areas such as the Old West, antique cars, aviation, film, and theatre.
