One of the First Works Published
    in Oklahoma City

[Oklahoma]. Bunky [pseudonym for Irvin Geffs]. The First Eight Months of Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City: The McMaster Printing Company, 1890. Very rare first edition of the first work of any size published in Oklahoma City. Octavo. 110 pages. Publisher's original yellow printed wrappers. Wrappers with soiling and scattered damp stains; repair along top edge of front wrapper; otherwise in very good condition. Offered in a custom quarter leather clamshell case with titles stamped in gilt on the spine. Contemporary ink signature of Henry Hindeman at head of front wrapper. This copy, the only copy recorded in American Book Prices Current since at least 1975, is from The Jay T. Snider Collection of Historic Americana (Christie's New York, 21 June 2005, Lot 331).

Published anonymously, this work is credited to Irving Geffs, who in the 1890 Oklahoma Territory Directory was listed as the city editor of the Evening Gazette. Oklahoma City was founded in April 1889 and settlers very quickly built up the city after the former Indian territory was opened up by the U.S. government. The Oklahoma Land Rush, with armed riders surging into the newly opened lands, is one of the defining events in western settlement. Geff's history of the first eight months opens with a description of the Land Rush and goes on to provide settlers's accounts of their experiences, biographical sketches of some of the residents, and descriptions of the government and social structures.
