"The Best French Chronicle of the Revolution" (Howes)

[Odet Julien Leboucher]. Histoire de la Derniere Guerre, Entre la Grande-Bretagne, et les États-Unis de l'Amérique, la France, l'Espagne, et la Hollande. Paris: Chez Brocas, 1787. First edition. Quarto. Approximately 10.25 x 7.75 inches. [xxxvi], [360] pages. With seven fold-out maps and two fold-out tables. Complete. Contemporary dark purple crushed straight-grain morocco over pebbled boards, spine ruled, tooled and lettered in gilt, marbled endleaves. Some wear to spine and joints, boards dampstained with edgewear, lower corners bumped, some faint dampstaining to text in lower corner, a few minor areas of damage in text. Text quite bright. Some wear to edges of a few maps, and a few maps or tables with marginal tears, none affecting images or text. Overall, a bright, very good set.

    More Information:

Signed by Bernard de Marigny, son of Bernard de Marigny, commander of the French frigate "Ardent" and nephew to another Captain de Marigny in command of the frigate "Cesar" (this is based on his ink notes under the listing of his father on the folding table of French Naval officers). With his interesting commentary on several pages (one of which is about George Washington becoming President). The excellent maps depict the east coast of the United States, the Gulf of Mexico, and several islands in the Caribbean.

    Howes L-166. Leclerq 827. Sabin 39613.
