    Atlas of Seventeenth-Century Maps

[Nicolas Sanson]. Atlas of Thirty-Four Hand-Colored Maps Printed Between 1641 and 1663. All bound in one folio atlas. Thirty-three maps measure 21.5 x 16.5 inches, and one, 12.5 x 13 inches.

Folio. Half calf over marbled boards. Boards detached. Closed tears to a few of the maps have been repaired. Very mild foxing. All maps complete. Very good.

Nicolas Sanson was one of the most important French cartographers of the seventeenth century and was the geography tutor to Louis XIII and Louis XIV. He and his three sons created a series of highly-regarded maps and atlases, and he enjoyed successful associations with Paris publishers such as Melchior Tavernier and Pierre Mariette. Among the thirty-four maps bound in this volume, several seem to have been originally bound in Sanson's masterwork, Cartes générales de toutes les parties du monde. Twenty-four of the maps are explicitly attributed to Nicolas Sanson. Several bear the name of Pierre Du Val, Sanson's son-in-law.

A wonderful collection of maps demonstrating the mid-seventeenth century's understanding of the geography of Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and South America. R. V. Tooley, in Maps and Map-Makers, explains that with Sanson, France became the dominant nation of geographers. "Nicolas Sanson [...] in effect laid the foundations of what is known as the French school, the beginning of a great period, for from the time of Sanson in the second half of the 17th century till the latter part of the 18th French geographical conceptions were dominant, the center of the map production shifting from the Low Countries to France."

    Tooley, 40.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
