    The First Collected Edition of Machiavelli's Works in English

    [Niccolo Machiavelli]. The Works of the Famous Nicolas Machiavel, Citizen and Secretary of Florence. Written Originally in Italian, and from thence newly and faithfully Translated into English. London: Printed for John Starkey, 1675. First English edition. Folio in fours (12.75 x 7.75 inches). General title and four sectional title pages. Woodcut vignette on general title. Woodcut printer's ornaments and decorative woodcut initials. Contemporary full calf with gilt spine titles and decorative spine stamping inside five raised bands. Front joint just barely cracking at the lower portion of the board, some rubbing and mild wear to joints, some wear to spine, some rubbing to board edges, previous owner's signature on title-page, some very minor occasional soiling in a few places in text, final leaf of the publisher's ad is missing the lower corner (without loss of text). With the bookplates of the Earl of Gifford and Cyril Sweett. A bright, fine copy of this rare title. Housed in a beautiful brown half leather drop-down box with elaborate gilt spine stamping and lettering.

    This collection includes Machiavelli's History of Florence, The Prince, The Discourses on Livy, and The Art of War, along with other minor pieces and the letter in vindication of his works (this last work dated a decade after his death and thought to be the work of the translator).
