    More Information:

[Naval History]. Josiah Burchett. A Complete History of the most Remarkable Transactions at Sea, from the Earliest Accounts of Time to the Conclusion of the Last War with France. London: Printed by W. B. for J. Walthoe, 1720. First edition. The first general naval history in English.

Folio. Approximately 12 x 7.5 inches. [56], 800, [32] pages. With nine folding maps, engraved frontispiece and portrait inserted. Also, this copy has the royal privilege leaf, missing from most copies. Bound in contemporary paneled calf, covers paneled in black, with black floral cornerpieces. Rebacked to style in later brown calf, preserving the original burgundy gilt morocco lettering label. Boards soiled and worn, hinges cracked (yet solid), privilege leaf torn at inner margin, all but one map browned, a few maps with tears, evidence of bookplate removal on front pastedown. Overall, a very good copy. From the library of Baron Cranworth, with his armorial bookplate on the front pastedown.

"This volume is particularly important in the literature of naval history, not only as a narrative of naval operations in the Nine Years'' War and the War of the Spanish Succession, but as the first general naval history written in the English language" (ODNB).
