    Description

The Large Paper Copy of Hughes'
Natural History of Barbados with the
    Rare Hand-Colored Plates

[Natural History]. Griffith Hughes. The Natural History of Barbados. London: Printed for the Author, 1750. First edition, large paper issue. Folio. Approximately 16.75 x 10 inches. [4], [viii], [10, List of Subscribers], [2], 314, [19], [1, blank] pages. With double-page engraved map (uncolored) and thirty engraved hand-colored plates inserted throughout. Contemporary full calf, boards ruled in gilt. Rebacked in the nineteenth-century in brown calf, spine ruled and tooled in gilt, green gilt morocco lettering label, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endleaves. Binding somewhat worn, front joint starting, front hinge cracking, some foxing and offsetting to text and plates. Page 233 with printer's flaw (page had folded-over and text had offset at an angle). Bookplate of book collector and author Moncure Biddle on the front pastedown. Overall, a near fine copy with the rare coloring (in the past, copies with no coloring or most of the prints hand-colored have sold - it is unusual to have copies with all plates colored). This copy with handsome color. Plates engraved by Mynde and Bickham after G. D. Ehret and other artists.
"This book is one to place besides Catesby's Natural History." (Hunt). This work is perhaps the first to discuss grapefruit (the "forbidden fruit" of Barbados).
    Hunt 536. Nissen BBI 950. Sabin 33582.
