Mudford's Account of the War Against Napoleon, With Twenty-Eight Beautiful Hand-Colored Aquatint Plates

[Napoleon]. William Mudford. An Historical Account of the Campaign in the Netherlands, in 1815, under His Grace the Duke of Wellington, and Marshal Prince Blucher, Comprising the Battles of Ligny, Quatre Bras, and Waterloo .... London: Henry Colburn, 1817. First edition. Large quarto. Approximately 11 x 13 inches. [xx], 368 pages. With double-page plate of the Battle of Waterloo, engraved title-page, two folding maps, and twenty-six full-page plates all hand-colored (except the maps, as issued). With half-title. Contemporary full brown diced calf , boards decoratively ruled in gilt, spine tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endleaves, all edges marbled. Rebacked, preserving the original spine, some repairs to corners, light foxing in text, previous owner's signature on front blank, text page 15/16 with tape repair for a long tear (still legible). Minor occasional offsetting to a few plates. Still, a fine copy with vivid color. This copy with the plate "Portraits of the General Officers" (here as the frontispiece) instead of the "Waterloo, in Memory of the Heroic Deeds of Shaw."Tooley indicates that copies are found with either plate, but not with both (no priority determined). The supplemental double-page plate, "View of the City of Brussels," is absent here, which is not surprising, as it is present only in a very few copies; it is not mentioned in the plate list in the book, nor in Tooley. Abbey's copy, however, contained this plate: "the book would appear to be complete without this view... it may be a supplementary plate of which only a few copies survive." (Abbey). George Cruikshank illustrated the frontispiece, the engraved title, the double-page plate of the battle, and "The Flight of Bonaparte;" the rest were made after paintings by James Rouse. "In this volume [Mudford] received assistance from the Duke of Wellington, to whom it was dedicated." (DNB). Tooley 336. Abbey, Life 372. Cohn, Cruikshank, 580. From a private collection from New Orleans.
