[Napoléon Bonaparte]. [C. L. F. Panckoucke, editor]. Paris: C. L. F. Panckoucke, 1821. First edition. Oblong folio (11.75 x 18.25 inches; 300 x 464 mm.). Five volumes. Forty engraved plates, eight in each volume, after paintings of Napoléon. Title leaf, leaf with description of the work and a smaller two-page prospectus inserted into Volume I; Volume V with twelve pages of plate descriptions, leaves slightly smaller than plates. Original side-stitched binding in publisher's printed light olive brown wrappers. Volume IV disbound, lacking string, but complete. Plates faintly foxed, with only a few image areas with any significant darkening; single plate ("Passage du Pont de Lodi") in second volume with large horizontal closed tear to fore-edge, extending the width of the margin and only just affecting the plate mark but not the image area, old paper repair on verso; edges worn. Wrapper edges worn; some centerfolds starting to split; a trace of biopredation; some corners torn; Volume I with small hole to upper margin, Volume V with small label and partial sticker. Still, a very good set. A beautiful and fragile production. Rare with only two complete institutional holdings located (Yale, Bibliothèque interuniversitaire Sainte-Geneviève); Bibliothèque nationale with Volume I only. Single auction record found (Tessier & Sarrou in 2000).

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
