An Excellent Lot of Music Books - the First
    Illustrated Edition of
    Le Marriage de Figaro and
    a Presentation Copy of
    L'Amore dei Tre Re

[Music]. Beaumarchais. La Folle Journée, ou le Mariage de Figaro. Paris: Rualt, 1785. First illustrated edition, first issue - the preferred edition, previously published by Beaumarchais without plates. Octavo. [lii], [201], [1, blank] pages. With five plates in suites of two (ten total plates) after Saint-Quentin, inserted throughout. Bound by Canape in early nineteenth-century quarter brown mottled calf over mottled paper boards, spine elaborately tooled in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, brown gilt morocco lettering label. Some rubbing to binding, minor occasional foxing in text. A fine copy. Housed in custom-built quarter red morocco clamshell case. [Together With:] [Italo Montemezzi, composer]. L'Amore dei Tre Re. Milano: G. Ricordi & C., 1913. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by Montemezzi on the recto of the portrait frontispiece. Quarto. [iv], 190 pages. Publisher's embossed paper over thin boards. Some wear to binding, recipient's name in the inscription is partially obscured, occasional soiling in text. Very good.
An excellent lot, distinguished by the preferred edition of Le Mariage de Figaro. This important (and controversial) work has survived due to the enduring character of Figaro, who has "secured a place in the collective psyche; his true cousins are Hamlet, Don Quixote or D'Artagnan..." (Coward, Introduction to Marriage of Figaro, 2008).
