[Mormons]. Elizabeth Rebecca Snow (1831-1915, wife of Mormon Apostle Erastus Snow). Autograph Letter Signed. Great Salt Lake City: January 31, 1857. Addressed, "Dear Erastus," written to her husband, Erastus Snow, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Latter-Day Saints. Four large quarto pages on one folding folio leaf. Each quarto page is approximately 9.75 x 7.75 inches; 247 x 197 mm. and the entire leaf, unfolded, is approximately 9.75 x 15.5 inches; 247 x 397 mm. On blue ruled paper, with a small embossed stamp ("O & H") in the upper corner of each page. With two vertical creases and two horizontal creases to each page, one vertical crease in the center of the folding folio leaf. The top of each page has a one-inch (approximately) tear (the tear appears twice on the folded leaf). Some minor intermittent soiling, smearing to text. On the final page, the creases are a bit browned, with a small area of apparent sticker or label residue (only minor loss of text). Still, a near fine letter.

More Information: In this letter, Elizabeth laments the fact that she hasn't seen her husband for quite some time, and that he hasn't written to her recently (she was one of four wives, in a household that had thirty-three children). She gives accounts of the winter that the people of Salt Lake City just endured, how her children miss Erastus, the health of his mother, marriages, and life in general. She mentions several prominent Mormons, including "Br. Young" (most likely Brigham Young). An interesting account of mid-nineteenth century Mormon life in Utah.

Her husband, Erastus (1818-1888) was an important Mormon Apostle, who gained notoriety through leading missions and expansions of Mormonism into Northern Europe and the American Midwest. He also founded Kingman and Snowflake, Arizona.
