    Description

[Mormon Church]. Parley P. Pratt (1807-1957, author and member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles). Autograph Letter, Signed. Santa Clara: Nov. 9, 1854. Handwritten letter signed "P. P. Pratt," addressed to a "Br[other] Caine," identified as "Mr John Caine" of San Francisco on exterior. One bifolium of lined paper consisting of four unnumbered pages (10 x 7.875 inches; 255 x 200 mm.). Text on recto and verso of front leaf; address on verso of rear leaf. Fully sealed in a mylar sleeve. Two vertical and two horizontal creases to leaves as a result of folding for mailing; subtle archival reinforcements at recto of second leaf where folds are wearing thin and developing holes, along a couple of tears (about 1.5 to 2.5 inches long) extending on from fore-edge, and to disguise a chip at fore-edge; faint, small embossed seal at head of first leaf, parallel to center fold; light soiling along folds and one small stain (possibly from sealing wax) at rear leaf, otherwise mild soiling, grubbiness confined to small area at verso of rear leaf, which served as the exterior of the letter when it was mailed. Still, near fine, with actual letter in remarkably clean, bright condition.

Pratt, then in California presiding over the Church's Pacific Mission, writes to authorize Caine to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: "You are hereby appointed and authorized to Labour in the ministry, in any part of California, not already occupied by other Elders. And if you will go forth boldly, and with patience and long suffering, visit from house to house, teach, pray, converse, preach and testify, and lend, sell, and circulate some printed truths, you will be blessed in the same, and you will lack for nothing, and your mission will be as acceptable as if it were on the Islands and in due time there will be fruits of your ministry to rejoice with you in the Kingdom of God." He describes a shipment of books coming from Liverpool, England, to be distributed among converts, including copies of Pratt's own book, A Voice of Warning, along with Books of Mormon and hymn books. It was in California, specifically San Francisco, that Pratt met Eleanor McLean, who would go on to become his twelfth wife and whose estranged husband, Hector McLean, was responsible for Pratt's death less than three years after this letter was written.
