[Mormon Church]. [Original Holograph Manuscript of Minutes for a General Conference]. [Place of production not identified, though likely Salt Lake City]: April 6-7, 1848. Three paginated, unlined leaves (12.25 x 7.375 inches; 311 x 187 mm.). Text on rectos and versos in unknown hand, appearing to get fresh ink or a new pen about one-third of the way down the verso of the first leaf, where text becomes darker. Accompanied by envelope made of folded sheet of same paper and with outside labeled "Mr Evan M Greene" in "Pottawatamie [sic] Iowa." Each leaf with three horizontal creases across width of sheet, from folding presumably to fit into accompanying envelope; otherwise minor handling and a few spots of ink smudging and bleed-through, along with a few isolated spots of foxing. Some general light wear with faint tidemarks at edges of envelope. Near fine.

Offering a compelling glimpse into the early Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, these minutes cover the two days of the conference and mark the start time of each session. They open, "Conference convened... 11 ocl- sing 1 hymn,, called to order by Pres. Geo. A Smith,, / Prayer by the Pres. Geo. A Smith / Remarks by Pres. O. Hyde and followed by Pres. Geo A Smith relative to the affairs and condition of the brethren present, but did not organize as the first Presidency had not arrived from Winter Quarters...." Important early leaders of the Church that are mentioned include George Albert Smith, member of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles; Orson Hyde, President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles; and Joseph Young, elder brother of Brigham Young.
