[Militaria]. [Arthur] St. Clair. A Narrative of ... the Campaign Against the Indians, in the Year 1791.... Phil: 1812.

    More Information:

[Militaria]. [Arthur] St. Clair. A Narrative of the Manner in Which the Campaign Against the Indians, in the Year One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety-One, was conducted, Under the Command of Major General St. Clair, Together with his Observations on the Statements of the Secretary of War and the Quarter Master General, Relative Thereto, and the Reports of the Committees Appointed to Inquire into the Causes of the Failure Thereof: Taken from the Files of the House of Representatives in Congress. Philadelphia: Jane Aitken, 1812. First edition, second issue (with the two leaves of Additional List of Subscriber's Names). Octavo. [4, blank], [xlv], 273, [5, blank] pages. Publishers' original cloth-backed boards. Rebacked in modern cloth and with new endleaves (there are still remnants of the original cloth on the boards near the joints). Some soiling and wear to boards, second blank has restoration and repair, several pages a bit roughly opened, text offset throughout, some foxing, soiling in text. Overall, a very good copy of this interesting account of St. Clair's terrible defeat and the slaughter of 800 of his men. This text is his defense of his actions, as well as supplementary reports and letters. Although St. Clair was exonerated by a Congressional committee and President Washington, he soon resigned his commission.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
