A Complete Copy of Historia de Nueva-España
by Cortes and Lorenzana, Including an Account
    of Cortes' Expedition to California

[Mexico and California]. Hernán Cortes and Francesco Lorenzana. Historia de Nueva-España... México: Joseph Antonio de Hogal, 1770. First edition of one of the best books printed in Mexico during the eighteenth century. Quarto. Approximately 10.75 x 7.25 inches. [20], xvi, 400, [18, index] pages. Complete with thirty-four plates inserted throughout, and two fold-out maps. Contemporary full calf, spine lettered and tooled in gilt. Spine restored at headcap, some wear to spine with loss of gilt. Spine is concave. Binding is worn and scuffed. Front free endpaper is missing. Title-page repaired at upper corner. Front hinge cracked ink stamps on verso and recto of title-page, some occasional foxing and thumbsoiling in text (yet generally bright). Pencil numbers to several plates. Both maps with short tears. Previous owner's inscription on front pastedown. Overall, a good copy.
This is an "important and highly esteemed work, containing the celebrated letters of Cortez to the Emperor Charles V. This edition is illustrated with copious notes and documents, together with facsimiles of the Mexican mode of representing the tributes paid by the different towns in Mexico. These pictures, more complete and colored like the originals are included in Lord Kingsborough's Antiquities of Mexico." (Sabin).
"Pages 322-328 contain an account of the voyage of Cortes to the peninsula of California and notices of later expeditions to 1769. The map of Castillo was inserted to illustrate this account, which Lorenzana states was copied from the original in the Archives of the Marquesado, that is, of the Cortes family. Since that time the original has never appeared, so we are still at a loss to know whether Castillo or Lorenzana put the name 'California' on the map." (Wagner, Spanish Southwest, 152).
