A Scarce, Beautifully Rendered and Extremely Detailed Map of Troy, New York

[Map]. William Barton. City of Troy N. Y. from Actual Surveys. By William Barton City Surveyor & Civil Engineer. W. Barton & J. Chace Jr., 1858. First edition of this enormous and impressive lithographic map. Six double-folio page segments of the original large map (at its full size, the map would be approximately 61.5 x 72.5 inches) mounted into a large contemporary portfolio. Now each linen-mounted double-page segment is approximately 26.75 x 32.5 inches when opened. Although there is mention of the engravers (Wm. J. Barker of Philadelphia) who "Engraved, Colored & Mounted" this item, this map is uncolored. A few minor tears and rubbing to extremities (not affecting image), some minor pencil marginalia. Portfolio is bound in contemporary gray cloth with calf corners (spine rubbed and worn at edges, some soiling to binding, calf quite worn). Overall, a very good map, which is quite clean. This is the first complete map of Troy, New York.
